Reacting to reports that eight local Aulds stores are to be saved following the liquidation of the chain’s retail arm, West Scotland Labour MSP Neil Bibby said:

“I have always said that I hoped a deal could be reached to keep stores open and save jobs in our town centres and, where that is not possible, every effort should be made to ensure that staff get the right support.

“News that eight stores are to keep trading means that this iconic Scottish brand will survive in Paisley and Johnstone town centres – and that is welcome. But we cannot escape the reality of three outlet closures in Renfrewshire and that 105 jobs are being lost across Scotland.

“This is a devastating time for those employees and their families, and it is absolutely essential that they are given all the support they are rightly entitled to.
“This is the latest in a series of high profile shop closures and resulting redundancies in our area, and it is absolutely imperative that the Scottish and UK Governments tackle the underlying economic difficulties town centres in our region are facing. Despite claims that the economy is thriving, there are clearly problems in some sectors and these cannot continue to go unaddressed.”
